Artist Statement

Birte Endrejat

My conceptual way of working, which manifests itself spatially, is invariably elicited by concrete situations. I take an interest in places: built and planned places. I question societal agreements of the places and examine the on-site media through which they are communicated: city maps, information boards, guidance systems, brochures, etc. On location, I observe what people do and record that in straightforward descriptive sentences. To return these observations to their place of origin, I appropriate the media directly available at the location itself. In doing so, I create a superposition of the real situation and a previous moment of the same place.

In my work I essentially explore the extent to which people carry out the architectural concepts of places as well as questioning the built structure as a setting and the information given as a precondition for action.
My concern is to lift functional systems from invisibility and to make them visible as systems of guidance, influencing and conditioning behavior in constructed places. By doing so, I re-examine the putative or assumed neutrality of information and emphasize that “someone” speaks to the “users”.

Since 2008 I have been part of the artist collective “mark”, which brings together people from the disciplines of architecture, design, social sciences and fine arts.
